  • Description

Reports from Saigon of a sharp increase in Communist guerrilla activity in recent weeks have been borne out by latest casualty figures.

These show that in the most recent week for which figures are available, 390 South Vietnamese government troops were killed, compared with 221 in the previous week.

Military officials in Saigon believe the new guerrilla offensive will reach a peak during the Vietnamese Lunar New Year celebrations in mid-February.

As part of a derive to reduce the effect of the guerrilla offensive South Vietnamese and Unites States troops this week took part in two defensive actions.

At Dau Tieng, 40 miles(64.4 km) west of Saigon, bulldozers were used to clear an area where suspected Vietcong commando parties were spotted.

South-west of Danang, United States and South Vietnamese troops carrying out a similar sweep came across what's believed to have been a Vietcong training ground. An armoured carrier was blown up by a mine and a 90-minute battle broke out after which the bodies of several suspected Vietcong and North Vietnamese soldiers were found.
