    INTO DUNKIRK HARBOUR THIS WEEKEND, SAILED AN ARMADA OF "LITTLE SHIPS" WHICH HAD TAKEN PART 25 YEARS AGO IN THE HISTORIC EVACUATION OF BRITISH TROOPS FROM DUNKIRK.

    NEARLY 700 SMALL CRAFT, INCLUDING FISHING BOATS YACHTS AND PLEASURE BOATS TOOK PART IN THE WORLD WAR TWO EVACUATION. THIS WEEKEND, MANY OF THE ORIGINAL LITTLE BOATS RETURNED TO DUNKIRK FOR SPECIAL CELEBRATIONS TO MARK THE QUARTER CENTURY OF THE EVACUATION.

    THE EVACUATION CELEBRATIONS COINCIDED WITH THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DELIVERANCE OF DUNKIRK FROM GERMAN OCCUPATION.

    THE LITTLE BOATS LEFT FROM RAMSGATE FOR THE CELEBRATIONS JUST AS THEY HAD SAILED FROM THE KENTISH HOLIDAY RESORT IN 1940. THERE WAS A RENDEZVOUS JUST OF THE ENGLISH COAST.

    DURING THE 9 DAYS IN THE SUMMER OF 1941 IN WHICH THE SMALL CRAFTS TRAVELLED TO AND FROM ACROSS THE ENGLISH CHANNEL 83,000 BRITISH TROOPS WERE EVACUATED FROM FRANCE.

    AMONG THE LITTLE BOATS TAKING PART IN THE CELEBRATIONS WERE A NUMBER OF RIVER BOATS STILL USED ON THE THAMES AND SCORES OF PLEASURE CRAFT, WHICH IN 1940 SAILED TO DUNKIRK TO PICK UP ALLIED TROOPS WHO HAD BEEN PINNED DOWN ON DUNKIRK BEACH BY HEAVY ARTILLERY FIRE.
