Background: One-hundred-thousand Egyptians demonstrated in the streets of Cairo, United Arab Republic, Dec 17, against what they called the "barbarous massacre" by the French authorities in Algeria. Anti-French demonstrations have also been staged recently in Istanbul, Turkey, and Beirut, Lebanon.

The demonstrators gathered in Cairo's Gomoriah Square, shouting slogans against "French imperialism", and blaming France for Moslem deaths in Algeria coinciding with the visit there of General de Gaulle.

El Sayed Kamal Eddin Hussein, Chairman of the Executive Council in the Southern Region and Central Minister of Education, made a speech and it was repeatedly interrupted by demonstrators shouting in favour of an "Algerian Algeria" and President Nasser. Some slogans described President Nasser as "the pioneer of Arab nationalism".

Other speakers were El Sayed Tawfik El Medani (Algerian representative in the U.A.R.) and El Sayed Youssef El Sebai. The proceedings were beamed by radio to the Arab world.
