THE MINISTER FOR THE INTERIOR, MR. YORGADJIS, CONDEMNED THE ATTACK. HE CALLED IT AN ABOMINABLE ACT AND SAID IT WAS THE WORK OF UNSCRUPULOUS PEOPLE WHOSE OBJECT IT WAS TO UNDERMINE THE WORK OF PACIFICATION AND NORMAL LIFE IN CYPRUS.

THE EXPLOSIONS CAME AFTER PRESIDENT MAKARIOS HAD ISSUED A STATEMENT SAYING THAT ANY ATTEMPT BY THE TURKS TO CREATE A "FAIT ACCOMPLI WILL BE FACED WITH ALL THE MEANS AT OUR DISPOSAL". HE WAS COMMENTING ON REPORTS - LATER DENIED BY A BRITISH MILITARY SPOKESMAN - THAT TURKISH ARMY TROOPS WERE TAKING UP POSITIONS IN HILLS TO THE NORTH OF NICOSIA.

THE PREVIOUS DAY FIRE BROKE OUT IN SEVERAL HOUSES IN THE DESERTED SUBURB OF OMORPHITA. MEN OF THE R.A.F. AND UNITS OF THE BRITISH ARMY ANSWERED THE FIRE CALL AND PUT OUT THE FIRES. THEY MANAGED TO SAVE SOME OF THE FURNITURE AND TO PREVENT THE FIRES FROM SPREADING TO OTHER HOUSES.
