  • Description

MORE THAN 500 STUDENTS CARRYING RED FLAGS MARCHED ON THE POLISH MILITARY MISSION IN WEST BERLIN YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) TO EXPRESS THEIR SYMPATHY WITH DEMONSTRATING STUDENTS IN WARSAW.

THE MARCHERS CARRIED A PORTRAIT OF LEON TROTSKY AND A BANNER READING "AGAINST STALINISM IN POLAND" AS THEY MOVED THROUGH THE CITY. ONE OF THE STUDENTS CARRYING THE TROTSKY BANNER WAS LARS BRANDT, THE 19-YEAR-OLD SON OF THE WEST GERMAN FOREIGN MINISTER, WILLY BRANDT.

THE GERMAN STUDENTS HAD AN "OPEN LETTER" FOR POLISH PRIME MINISTER JOSEF CYRANKIEWICZ. THE LETTER CONTAINED A PLEDGE OF THEIR SUPPORT FOR THE POLISH STUDENTS AND A CONDEMNATION OF POLAND'S "SUPPRESSION OF COMMUNIST STUDENTS WITH BRUTAL POLICE MEASURES AND SUMMARY COURTS." THE STUDENTS TRIED TO DELIVER THE LETTER AT THE MISSION BUT WERE UNSUCCESSFUL. SO THEY FASTENED THE NOTE TO A LAMP-POST OUTSIDE ITS DOOR. WEST GERMAN POLICE, IN ALLOWING THE MARCH, CLEARED THE WAY FOR THE DEMONSTRATORS BUT PUT UP CRASH BARRIERS OUTSIDE THE POLISH MISSION.
