    WITH THE ENTIRE RACE JUST PAST THE HALFWAY STAGE, ANQUETIL IS NOW A MERE 3 MINUTES 3 SECONDS BEHIND THE LEADER, GILBERT DESMET I, OF BELGIUM, WHO RETAINS THE YELLOW JERSEY.

    WINNER OF TODAY'S 131-KILOMETRE (87-MILE) STAGE WAS GUY IGNOLIN (No 6) OF FRANCE. IGNOLIN WAS IN THE LEAD EARLY, AS THE RACE REACHED THE FIRST OF THREE HILLS, THE COL D'ASPIN, ON THE 11TH STAGE. WITH HIM IN A BREAKAWAY GROUP WERE CLAUDE MATTIO (No 47) AND GUY EPAUD (No 62), BOTH FRENCHMEN.

    WHEN THE LEADERS CLIMBED THE SECOND HILL. THE COL DE PEYRESOURDE, FEDERICO BAHAMONTES (No 41) OF SPAIN HAD OUTPACED IGNOLIN. BAHAMONTES WAS GOING STRONG FOR A TIME, BUT CRASHED ON THE DESCENT AND LOST VALUABLE TIME. HE WAS MORE THAN TWO MINUTES BEHIND AT THE THIRD HILL, THE COL DE PORTILLON, AND FINISHED AMONG THE MAIN FIELD IN POURING RAIN. BAHAMONTES IS FIFTH IN THE OVERALL CLASSIFICATION.
