  • Description

Kenya's veteran President, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, officially opened the biggest-ever Nairobi Agricultural Show on Wednesday (1 October).

The Show -- sited in the capital's 150 acre Jamhuri Park -- is Africa's leading agricultural and international trade event, and this year has attracted a bumper number of competitors and exhibitors.

Despite a heavy 48 percent increase in farm costs, this year's Show -- organised by the Agricultural Society of Kenya -- has drawn a record number of livestock and produce entries.

Ten countries, including Britain, West Germany, Austria, the Seychelles, Uganda, and Zambia, are also staging some of the Show's 223 individual trade exhibitions. One permanent pavilion, however, is empty. Nigeria is not taking part in this year's Show.

One stand of particular interest to Kenyans and to wildlife conservationists from all over the world is Kenya's National Park stand. Park rangers and officials have been running a campaign to crack down on ivory poachers over the past eighteen months.

Also on display are various pieces of equipment used in satellite transmission -- exhibited by the East African Posts and Telecommunications Corporation.

During its five-day run, organisers are expecting more than 200,000 visitors. The Show's theme for 1975 is "This land of ours".

The theme was picked up by President Kenyatta in his official address. He urged farmers all over the country to ensure that Kenya remains self-sufficient in basic food supplies, as part of the fight against world inflation.
