  • Description

President Urho Kekkonen of Finland arrive in Moscow this week at the start of a four-day official visit to reaffirm his country's good relations with the Soviet Union.

The 69-year-old Finnish leader was greeted at Moscow's Vnukovo airport by Premier Alexei Kosygin and President Nikolai Podgorny.

During talks with Soviet leaders President Kekkonen discussed the renewal of the friendship treaty which the two nations signed after Finland's World War Two defeat for a further 20 years. Soviet President Podgorny was reported as saying the treaty had ben renewed, however, further reports said the Finnish leader had only discussed the possibility.

The treaty, due to expire in 1975, has influenced the growth of Finland's international authority and its extension would strengthen both countries' intentional position.

President Podgorny said the two leaders' talks at the Kremlin also touched on the delivery of Soviet natural gas to Finland and the construction of a second atomic power station there. Russian has already agreed to help build the first.
