  • Description

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ismail Fahmi told Arab foreign minsters at a meeting in Cairo on Monday (24 March) to step up the campaign to isolate Israel from the world and the United Nations.

The meeting was scheduled to last four days, but broke up on Tuesday when it was learned King Faisal had been assassinated.

Mr. Fahmi said Israel should be treated like South Africa and Rhodesia. He was briefing other delegates at the Arab League meeting about the failure of Dr. Kissinger's peace mission.

The Egyptian Minister said Israeli arrogance and insistence that Egypt terminate the state of belligerency had caused the breakdown.

The Secretary-General of the League, Mr. Mahmoud Riad, told the council that it was the duty of the United States to at least stop supplying Israel with weapons, because such weapons were used in strengthening Israeli occupation and violating the Palestinian people's rights.

He accused Israel of stalling in order to prepare and develop military strength.

The meeting was held to discuss the formation of a ministerial committee to prepare for a joint Arab-African summit as well as the possible resumption of the Geneva peace conference.
