  • Description

The First Battalion of the Staffordshire Regiment, the last major British unit to serve in the Arabian Gulf, began their withdrawal on Monday (22 November). The withdrawal of all British forces in the area is due to be completed in December, as part of their general disengagement east of Suez.

Iraq is making a determined bid for influence in the Gulf area, before this happens. Government officials recently completed a week-long tour of the area, promising aid and cooperation to the Emirs and Sheikhs who rule the desert states along the Arabian shore of the Gulf.

Iraq is working to try to prevent Iraq, which controls the entire opposite, north-eastern coastline, from becoming the dominant force when Britain ends its military and political presence. This is official film from the British Ministry of Defence.
