  • Description

Hundreds of students attended the funeral on friday (7 May) of a university student shot in a street fight in Istanbul between left and right wingers after May Day clashes in Turkey.

The killing brought the death toll from six months of intermittent political violence in Turkey to 42. The youth was seriously injured on Saturday night (1 May) in a gunfight between two rival groups following a May Day rally in Istanbul. He died three days later in hospital.

Scores of riot police were on hand in Istanbul to prevent any trouble at the funeral.

Nine other students were reported injured in another incident in the eastern Turkish city of Kars. In Kars, near the Soviet border, leftists and rightists fought with guns and knives at a teachers' training college.

And in Istanbul on wednesday (5 May) bomb explosions ripped through a police station and shops in a business centre. Student fights flared in four Turkish cities injuring 18 people on the eve of the fifth anniversary of the execution of three prominent left-wing guerrillas.

Students battled with sticks and stones in Istanbul, Izmir, Trabzon and Gaziantep.

Officials declined to say whether the fights and explosions were connected with the 6 May, 1971 executions of the guerrillas, including Deniz Gezmis, who has now become a folk hero for many left-wingers.
