The new Northern Ireland Government of Prime Minister Mr. Brian Faulkner is conducting an all-out?

  • Description

The new Northern Ireland Government of Prime Minister Mr. Brian Faulkner is conducting an all-out drive against illegal weapons in private hands.

In support of the arms amnesty which began on Tuesday and will last until April 8, British Government troops are conducting searches where-ever they consider illegal arms might be hidden.

The crop of unlicensed arms so far produced by the amnesty is small, including many old and rusty weapons not fit for use.

Meanwhile Northern Ireland's violence continues, with four explosions reported on April 2 within a few hours, one of them at a Transport information kiosk in Belfast.

SYNOPSIS: In Belfast the early results are appraised of the arms amnesty in Northern Ireland called by Prime Minister Brian Faulkner on the 30th of March, and due to run till the 8th of April. By the second day of the amnesty the response had been rather small, with only forty-three weapons handed in. Many were old and rusty, quite unfit for use. Most of them were unlicensed, although the Ulster Prime Minister has called for people to hand in lawful arms as well to their local police stations, as a gesture of faith. At the same time, British troops are stepping up their searches everywhere they believe that illegal arms may be harboured. They have become quite experience at finding the hiding places for weapons in private houses, barns and outhouses.

In Belfast only a few days ago, children playing found 159 rounds of ammunition scattered in a street, and in an another area ten pounds of explosive was found hidden in milk churn in a ditch. Observers doubt whether amnesty. For both guns and gelignite, will produce more than a tiny fraction of the illegal arms in existence in the province. Meanwhile Northern Ireland's violence continues, with explosions a daily occurrence. Four were reported within a few hours on Friday, one of them at a Transport Information Kiosk in Belfast.
