Background: The founder of the order of 'The Little Sisters of Abandoned Old People', the Spanish Sister, Theresa of Jesus Jornet y Ibers, was proclaimed beatified during a solemn ceremony in St. Peter's Basilica on April 27. The ceremony was watched from a special platform by 70 old people chosen from the various homes provided by the Order....they represented 17,500 such persons who are cared for by these Sisters. The ceremony began at 10-o-clock when the mazzieri (a special guard of honour for laymen) introduced the procession which brought Monseignor Giulio Barletta with his escort of Vatican gendermes. Mons. Barletta read a letter with which the Holy Father allows the Servant of the Lord, Theresa, to be publicly venerated. While the beatification 'formula' was being read, the bells of the Basilica rang out. At the end, an image of the beatified nun appeared over the main altar and, outside, a tapestry bearing the picture of Sister Theresa was uncovered. In the afternoon, the Basilica was alight with thousands of chandeliers and arclights. His Holiness, the Pope, was carried into the church seated on the 'Sedia Gestatoria'. The procession moved along the centre of the church and on reaching the altar the Holy Father alighted and knelt in reverent prayer before the effigy of Sister Theresa. At the end of the ceremony, the Pope was presented with an artistic Relic Holder in the form of a belfry of the Cathedral in Valencia, images and biographies of Sister Theresa and bunches of flowers.
