  • Description

SOCCER RIOTS REPORTED TO HAVE CAUSED NEARLY 12,000 PEOPLE TO FLEE THEIR HOMES IN FEAR OF THEIR LIVES HAVE LED TO AN APPEAL FOR HELP TO THE INTER-AMERICAN COMMISSION FOR HUMAN RIGHTS. THE APPEAL BY THE EL SALVADOR FOREIGN MINISTRY FOLLOWED EL SALVADOR'S RECENT 3-1 VICTORY OVER NEIGHBOURING HONDURAS IN THE 1970 WORLD CUP PRELIMINARIES. AFTER THE MATCH THERE WERE SERIOUS DISTURBANCES IN HONDURAS DURING WHICH SALVADOREANS LIVING THERE WERE ALLEGED TO HAVE BEEN ILL-TREATED BY HONDURAN SOCCER FANATICS.

EL SALVADOR'S INTERIOR AND MIGRATION MINISTER, FRANCISCO JOSE GUERRERO, CLAIMS NEARLY 12,000 MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN HAVE SO FAR FLED HONDURAS TO EL SALVADOR, CREATING A SERIOUS REFUGEE PROBLEM. THE RED CROSS IS GIVING THE REFUGEES FOOD, CLOTHES AND SHELTER.

ON THE DAY THIS FILM WAS SHOT (JUNE 28), THE FOREIGN MINISTERS OF COSTA RICA, NICARAGUA AND GUATEMALA FLEW INTO EL SALVADOR ON A PEACE BID. THEIR MEDIATION OFFER HAD BEEN ACCEPTED BY BOTH COUNTRIES.
