  • Description

REINHARD TRITSCHER OF AUSTRIA AND FLORENCE STEURER OF FRANCE WON THE GIANT SLALOM RACES OF THE WORLD CUP SKI RACES AT SQUAW VALLEY, CALIFORNIA, ON SATURDAY (1 MARCH).

THE EVENTS TOOK PLACE UNDER SUNNY SKIES AND ON FRESHLY-PACKED SNOW, BUT FOUR OF THE WOMEN COMPETITORS FELL AT A TRICKY LEFT TURN JUST TWO CATES FROM THE END OF THE RUN.

MISS STEURER DEFEATED MARILYN COCHRAN OF THE UNITED STATES BY .37 OF A SECOND WITH HER TIME OF 1.12.43, AND MOVED INTO FIFTH PLACE IN WORLD CUP STANDINGS BEHIND AUSTRIA'S GERTRUD GABL.

TRITSCHER'S COMBINED TIME OF THE TWO RUNS WAS 2.19.56; JACOB TISCHHHAUSER OF SWITZERLAND WAS SECOND WITH 2.19.67 AND AUSTRIA'S HEINI MESSNER WAS THIRD WITH 2.19.74.

AFTER THE FIRST RUN, TRITSCHER WAS LYING FOURTH - BUT HE WAS LAST TO DESCEND ON THE SECOND RUN AND BENEFITED FROM THE PACKING DOWN OF THE NEW SNOW BY PREVIOUS SKIERS. HIS 1.07.60 ON THE SECOND RUN GAVE HIM FIRST PLACE ON COMBINED TIMES, BUT THE 25 POINTS HE ADDED TO HIS WORLD CUP TOTAL STILL LEAVE HIM WELL BEHIND LEADER KARL SCHRANZ, ALSO OF AUSTRIA.
