  • Description

A FORMIDABLE ASSET TO THE AMERICAN MILITARY FORCES IN VIETNAM - A 36-TON TRACTOR - IS BRINGING COMPLAINTS FROM MANY VIETNAMESE FARMERS.

THE AMPHIBIOUS TRACTOR CALLED AMTRAC IS USED BY MARINE TO HUNT THE VIETCONG - BUT AT THE SAME TIME, IT'S RUINING RICE PADDIES AND CEMETERIES.

AMTRAC HAS AN 810-HORSEPOWER ENGINE AND TRACKS 18 INCHES WIDE. WHEN IN PURSUIT OF THE VIETCONG THESE MONSTROUS MACHINES CAN MOVE QUICKLY THROUGH RICE PADDIES, BUT THEY OBLITERATE MOST THINGS IN THEIR PATH.

MANY VIETNAMESE FARMERS SAY AMTRACS ARE DESTROYING THEIR CROPS AND ALSO PLOUGHING UP BURIAL GROUNDS.

THE AMERICANS, ON THE OTHER HAND, ARE GOING TO CONTINUE USING THE AMTRAC BECAUSE IT HAS PROVED TO BE PRACTICALLY THE ONLY VEHICLE WHICH CAN HAUL TROOPS AND SUPPLIES THROUGH THE RICE PADDIES AND CEMETERIES.

SOUTH VIETNAM HAS FEW ROADS AND FREQUENTLY THERE IS NO OTHER WAY TO GO. AMTRAC DRIVERS ALSO LIKE TO TAKE A NEW ROUTE FOR EACH MISSION BECAUSE THE VIETCONG PLANT MINES ALONG WORN PATHS. SO EACH DAY, NEW PADDY FIELDS ARE CHURNED UP.

TO SMOOTH THE HOSTILITY THIS CAUSES, EACH AMERICAN BATTALION HAS A CLAIMS OFFICER WHO PAYS OUT 10 DOLLARS FOR EVERY YARD OF PADDY TORN UP, AND 100 DOLLARS FOR EACH GRAVE DAMAGED.
