Background: Following last month's riots in Egypt over food price increases, 59 people appeared before a Cairo court on Wednesday (16 February), charged with forming Communist organisations and inciting violence.

SYNOPSIS: One of the defence lawyers who spoke at length when the trial opened, was Mr. Abdulla Elzoughbi. He asked that the defendants should be released on bail, but this was opposed by the prosecution. After the January food riots, the Government had banned strikes and demonstrations.

But two days before the trial began, the ban had been defied by about 400 students at Cairo University. They had staged a noisy anti-Government demonstration on the University campus. They had ben protesting at the Government's tough new law and order measures imposing hard labour for demonstrations, strikes and sit-ins.

The measures had been introduced in the wake of the food riots in which 79 people died and about 800 were injured. The students had called for the abolition of the new measures and the restoration of student rights to hold political meetings.
