  • Description

TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN, THE MALAYSIAN PRIME MINISTER, TODAY (MAY 12) FORECAST A MAJOR CABINET RESHUFFLE AS SUPPORTERS OF OPPOSITION PARTIES CELEBRATED THE GAINS THEIR LEADERS MADE IN THE WEST MALAYSIAN ELECTIONS HELD ON SATURDAY (MAY 10).

THE TUNKU'S RULING ALLIANCE PARTY SUFFERED A MAJOR SETBACK IN THE ELECTION, THE THIRD HELD IN THE FEDERATION SINCE INDEPENDENCE. WITH THE DECLARATION OF THE WEST MALAYSIAN RESULTS THE GOVERNMENT RETAINS A MAJORITY IN THE FEDERAL PARLIAMENT, BUT LOST THREE CABINET MINISTERS, SEVERAL PARTY LEADERS, AND CAPTURED JUST LESS THAN HALF THE POPULAR VOTE.

VOTING CONTINUES IN THE EASTER STATES OF SARAWAK AND SABAH, WHERE RESULTS WILL NOT BE KNOWN FOR SOME TIME BECAUSE OF COMMUNICATION DIFFICULTIES, BUT THE ALLIANCE FACES THE POSSIBILITY OF LOSING THE TWO-THIRDS MAJORITY NEEDED FOR CONSTITUTIONAL CHANGES.

COMMENTING ON THE RESULTS, THE TUNKU SAID: "NO-ONE CAN NOW DENY DEMOCRACY IS WORKING HERE. THE PEOPLE WANTED A STRONG OPPOSITION AND THEY ARE GETTING IT."
TODAY HE PROMISED A MORE PROGRESSIVE AND DYNAMIC GOVERNMENT AND APPEALED FOR CONTINUED RACIAL HARMONY IN THE COUNTRY. ALLIANCE LEADERS WILL MEET IN KUALA LUMPUR ON WEDNESDAY (14 MAY) WHEN HE PLANS TO FORM A NEW CABINET. THE TUNKU HAS ALREADY ANNOUNCED THAT THIS WILL BE HIS LAST TERM IN OFFICE.

THE ALLIANCE ALSO SUFFERED SETBACKS IN SIMULTANEOUS ELECTIONS TO STATE ASSEMBLIES. TO SOME EXTENT THE RESULTS ARE SEEN AS EMPHASISING RACIAL DIVISIONS: RURAL MALAYS PLAYED A STRONG PART IN SECURING 12 FEDERAL SEATS FOR THE PAN MALAY ISLAMIC PARTY, WHILE URBAN CHINESE ARE NOW REPRESENTED BY THE DEMOCRATIC ACTION PARTY'S 13 SEATS. THE DAP'S GENERAL SECRETARY, GOH HOCK GAUN, WHO SCORED A NOTABLE SUCCESS, HAS SAID HE WILL NOW TRY TO GET THE OPPOSITION PARTIES TO MERGE.
