  • Description

A new highway, linking the Gabonese capital, Libreville, with the nearby airport is under construction and scheduled to be completed shortly. It is part of a drive by the government to improve the country's infrastructure and open up outlying rural areas.

SYNOPSIS: The Gabon is a country rich in mineral and natural resources, but development has been restrict by the lack of transport links. So roads like this one are an important feature of Gabon's economic growth. It is being built with the help of two foreign construction companies, from Yugoslavia and France.

Gabon's transport system is poor, and much of the country is inaccessible by road for part of the year. So schemes like this one are helping to improve the infrastructure, and in turn the economy. The annual production of manganese is limited to two million tonnes simply because that is the most the transport system can handle.

Without a proper transport network it is difficult for industry to expand. Most of Gabon's population of just under one million are scattered over the countryside. But the industry is located in the two large towns, Libreville and Port Gentil -- both on the coast. So, by building up the transport system, the Gabonese government hopes to bring the potential manpower within reach of industry.
