  • Description

Dr. Ralph Bunche, United Nations mediator, - recently in the Congo Republic to supervise the UN troops now helping restore order gave a press conference September 1 in one of the conference rooms of the UN headquarters in New York. After a short prepared speech, during which he discussed the nature of the troubles besetting the Congo Republic, he then answered questions from the reporters from all over the world who had gathered to hear him.

Minimizing the personal danger he had run when he removed forcibly from his hotel room at the point of a Sten gun, he said that one didn't think about the danger but about the fact that of all the people removed from their rooms at the point of a rifle or machine gun, not one had been killed.

He was asked how long he thought the UNEF would remain in the Republic of the Congo, and someone quoted a statement he is thought to have made that the troops would need to remain another 5 years. This report he denied, saying that it was for the Security Council to put a time limit on the duration of the stay of their troops. One of the reporters said he had spoken optimistically to the press conference - did he think the situation in he Congo merited optimism in the face of reports of further outbreaks of violence. He said he thought the worst is over. He declined to answer all questions of a political content, saying he thought the Congo had enough troubles without adding the cold war.
