Background: President Nixon was in Madrid today (Friday October 2) for his one-day visit to Spain. After receiving and enthusiastic welcome from vast throngs of people at the start of his 21-hour visit, President Nixon held talks with the Spanish head of State General Franco.

President Nixon was visibly pleased and impressed by his welcome. He turned from side to side with gestures reminiscent of an American election campaign. The visit is seen as a diplomatic triumph for General Franco's regime and follows the signing of a new agreement for American military bases in Spain. On his arrival the President hailed military cooperation between the two countries as an indispensable pillar of peace in the Mediterranean.

Mr Nixon met with General Franco for a 90 minute session of talks at he Parade Palace, the General's official residence outside Madrid. White House officials said the talk's covered the Middle East crisis and bilateral American-Spanish trade problems as well as Mediterranean security.

Prince Juan Carlos of Bourbon also met with the President, The Prince was last year named as successor to General Franco and will become king when he either retires or dies. President Nixon spoke with the Prince for 40 minutes after his discussions with General Franco.

Spain was the third stop in Mr Nixon's eight-day european tour of five countries.
