  • Description

LEADERS OF ITALY'S RULING CHRISTIAN DEMOCRAT PARTY, INCLUDING PRIME MINISTER MARIAND RUMOR AND PARTY SECRETARY ARNALDO FORNALI, MET YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) TO DISCUSS LATEST MOVES TOWARDS FARMING A NEW FOUR-PARTY COALITION GOVERNMENT.

PRIME MINISTER RUMOR'S MINORITY CHRISTIAN DEMOCRAT GOVERNMENT HAD BEEN EXPECTED TO RESIGN BY THE END OF JANUARY TO MAKE WAY FOR A NEW COALITION.

BUT DESPITE FIVE WEEKS OF MEETINGS BY LEADERS OF FOUR PARTIES - THE CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATS, SOCIALISTS, SOCIAL DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS - A COALITION FORMULA WAS NOT THRASHED OUT UNTIL THIS WEEK.

THE LATEST PROPOSALS WERE DISCUSSED AT THURSDAY'S MEETING OF THE CHRISTIAN DEMOCRAT PARTY EXECUTIVE. AT THE END OF THE SESSION, PARTY LEADERS WERE SATISFIED THAT FINAL NEGOTIATIONS FOR A COALITION COULD GO AHEAD. THE SITUATION NOW DEPENDS ON THE DECISION OF THE OTHER THREE PARTY EXECUTIVES.
