About 25,000 young people, mostly university students, assembled in four separate parte of Tokyo on Saturday (28 April) to commemorate "Okinewe Oey" The ???land was retouched to Japanese administration by the United States of American last year, but the Americans have kept a force of some 30,000 troops on Okinawa, in accordance with a Japanese-US Mutual Security Treaty.
The young demonstrators are opposed to this American presence and demand that the Japanese government act soon and send them home.
The demonstrators blamed the presence of United States forces in Indochina for prolonging the fighting and made it plain by banner and chant that american troops should stay away from the Khmer Republic.
One group of demonstrators assembled in front of the United States Embassy. When they had formed-up in close-rank "Dragon" formation the youngsters clashed head-on with Riot Police.
More than 2,000 Riot Police were mobilised to guard the US Embassy and government buildings in Tokyo.
At Shiba Park in the city centre about 1,500 demonstrators noisily rallied demanding that the Japanese Government force the withdrawal of US military from Okinaws.
