  • Description

On Thursday (11 May), newsmen and photographers from Israel and around the world were shown behind the scenes of the Lod airport works of Israel Aircraft Industries Limited. (IAI).

This year I.A.I. the country's only manufacturer of aircraft -- is participating in two international air shows, the Thirtieth Paris Air Show at Le Bourget (May5- June3) and the Sao Paulo Aeronautical Exhibition in Brazil from September 14th to the 23rd. The company's exhibits at the shows will include the Gabriel sea-to-sea missile system, in its first ever public presentation.

The operating history of I.A.I. dates back to 1953 when its forerunner, Bedek Aircraft Company, was established with seventy employees. Since then, some thirteen-thousand people from over eighty countries have joined the company.

I.A.I. produces one aircraft fully designed and built in Israel -- the Arava, Short-Take-Off and Landing transport plane. Carrying twenty passengers or two tons of cargo the Arava can be used in a variety of military and civil roles. Powered by two turboprop-engines - the Arava takes off in under 600 feet (180 metres) and lands from a height of 50 ft (15 metres) using only 900 feet (274 metres) of runway. I.A.I. is now working on a larger version of the Arava capable of taking up to 30 passengers. It should be available within three years.

The company also produces the Washington Business Jet. Capable of cruising at 500 m.p.h. (800 k.p.h.) at altitudes of up to 45,000 feet (12,400 metres), the Westwind is a modification of the Commodore 1123 manufactured by the Rockwell Standard Corporation of America.
