  • Description

About 10,000 angry French winegrowers on Tuesday (15 April) staged a series of demonstrations throughout southern France as Common Market Farm Ministers met in Luxembourg to end the wine war between France and Italy.

In the town of Beziers near Montpellier the winegrowers used rubble and burning tyres to block major roads. This action was repeated throughout the region and traffic in the areas was paralysed.

Police reported no major incidents resulting from the demonstrations.

After a day of discussions the Agriculture Ministers announced a solution which allowed the French border to be reopened to Italian wine imports. It was closed last month after the demonstrations by winegrowers began.

Several million hectolitres (gallons) of wine will be distilled into industrial alcohol at the Common Market's expense in an effort to remove the surplus.
