  • Description

The United Nations Secretary-General, Dr Waldheim, has completed his five-day visit to South Africa and Southwest Africa (Known in the United Nations as Namibia).

The highlight of the trip was a visit on Wednesday to Ovamboland where Dr. Waldheim met African headmen and visited a modern hospital.

During his stay in Ovamboland, Dr Waldheim said he hoped his visit would contribute to a better understanding between the South African Government and the United Nations over the Southwest Africa question.

(South Africa administered Southwest Africa - a former German territory under a mandate from the defunct League of Nations. The present world body has demanded that South Africa grant the region independence - but so far south Africa has refused).

SYNOPSIS: Grootfontein Airport in Southwest africa and the arrival of Dr Kurt Waldheim, Secretary-General of the United Nations. This was the most important part of his five-day visit to South Africa and Southwest Africa: the trip to the heart of Ovamboland. Ad he Stopped from the plane, Dr Waldheim was welcomed by a group of African headmen.

During his visit, Dr Waldheim spent three full days in Southwest africa. He was there at the request of the Security Council and at the invitation of the South African Government.

Also on the schedule for Dr Waldheim -- a visit to a modern hospital in Oshakati, which is in the heart of Ovamboland.

This area is still under emergency rule following a recent strike by more than 14-thousand Ovambo workers. During his visit to Oshakati, Dr Waldheim told newsmen that he hoped his visit would contribute to a better understanding between the South African Government and the United Nations. But he wouldn't be drawn on how far he'd got in his talks. The patients and staff Dr Waldheim met at this hospital will -- like the rest of the world - have to wait until Dr. Waldheim has reported to the United Nations before they can judge the success of his mission.

Mr Waldheim was due to leave for home on Friday.
