INTRODUCTION Buddhism is the dominant religion of Taiwan and the island is dotted with temples and shrines. But the education complex on Fo Kuang Mountain is now a sophisticated education centre for Buddhist students from all over the world.
SYNOPSIS: This Buddha statue, more than one hundred feet (30 metres) in height, stands on top of a once-desolate mountain - Fo Kuang - in southern Taiwan. Now, the mountain top is the site of a modern, advanced educational complex which specialises in the teaching of Buddhist students of all nationalities.
The pathway to the university leads through a gateway lined with Buddhist statues. It is called "the Only Gateway" to Buddhist immortality.
The novices studying at the centre attend frequent prayer assemblies in the main temple which, despite its traditionally ornate exterior, is relatively modern and sparse inside. The statues within the temple are not worshipped, but used as objects of meditation so as to guide the minds of the students towards Buddhist salvation...emphasising the three paths of merit, faith and the inner light of self-realisation.
