THE CITY'S LARGEST EVER TURNOUT OF POLICE HAD TO DEAL WITH MINOR SCUFFLES IN THE CROWDS AND SEVERAL PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED FOR CARRYING "DAGGER-TYPE" KNIVES. NGEI HIMSELF CLAIMED THAT HE HAD BEEN HURT BY KANU SUPPORTERS.

MR NGEI, WHO FORMED THE APP TO CHALLENGE THE POWERFUL KANU PARTY, IS POLITICAL LEADER OF THE 750,000-STRONG KAMBA TRIBE AND SOME OBSERVERS FEEL THAT HIS PARTY COULD HOLD THE BALANCE OF POWER IN THE FORTHCOMING ELECTIONS. VOTING IN THE ELECTIONS - TO INTRODUCE INTERNAL SELF-GOVERNMENT - IS EXPECTED TO TAKE PLACE ABOUT JULY OR AUGUST.
