A fire raged out of control for six hours Sunday (14 July) on a 600-foot pier on the waterfront in Tacoma, Washington (U.S.West Coast).A fire department battalion chief was killed fighting the flames and 17 other firemen were injured.Damaged is estimated at more than two-million dollars.

The fire was so hot that it melted part of a fire truck and scorched four big dockside cranes. Two Japanese freighters were moved from the pier but not before one of them caught fire and was slightly damaged.

The blaze started when a crane ran over an electric power cable...causing a short that sent sparks showering onto the creosote-soaked pilings that supported the pier. The fire spread quickly along the entire length of the pier.
