Background: Nigeria's head of state Major-General Yakubu Gowon celebrated his 36th birthday on Monday (October 19) at the Dodan Barracks, Lagos. After inspecting the Brigade of Guards he paid a special tribute to the Armed Forces.
General Gowon expressed his thanks for the dedication and service of the Nigerian Armed Forces and called them the pride of the nation. The head of state paid special tribute to the federal guards for their standard of discipline: the people knew, he said, that they were their protectors.
Referring to the tenth anniversary of Nigeria's independence celebrated recently, General Gowon observed that it had been a matter of interest in African and international circles. The Commander-in-Chief urged the Armed Forces to continue to dedicate their lives to the service of the nation and ensure that Nigeria sees a period of everlasting peace.
