  • Description

Large areas of New Jersey, in the United States, were swept by floodwaters on Monday (21 July), after a fierce overnight storm lashed the state already suffering from two weeks of heavy rains.

During the storm, six inches (15 cms) of rain fell during a nine hour period. That, added to the further six inches which had fallen during the previous week, turned rivers into raging torrents. Worst affected was the city of Trenton, the state capital.

Floodwaters completely cut the New York to Washington railway line, Knocking a southbound train off the track and stranding goods trains in Trenton's marshalling yards.

Although Trenton's mayor declared his city a disaster area, there were no reports of deaths on this occasion though five people died, and two were reported missing, when New Jersey was first affected by floods only five days earlier.

This time, more than a thousand families had to be evacuated from their homes in Trenton. Several smaller towns in the area were also hit. And weather forecasters added to the gloom by predicting more storms ahead.
