    ARMOURED CARS AND TROOPS SEALED-OFF STREETS LEADING TO THE OFFICE OF ACTING INDONESIAN PRESIDENT GENERAL SUHARTO.

    THE STUDENTS CARRIED FLAGS, BANNERS AND POSTERS.

    SOME STUDENT LEADERS BOARDED ARMOURED VEHICLES FROM WHERE THEY ADDRESSED THEIR PROTESTING COLLEAGUES. THEY CLAIMED THAT OFFICIALS, CIVILIAN AS WELL AS MILITARY, WERE CONTINUALLY ENGAGED IN CORRUPTION, FRAUD AND ABUSE OF POWER FOR THEIR OWN ENDS.

    GENERAL SUHARTO CAME OUT OF HIS OFFICE AND TOLD THEM "WE CANNOT OVERCOME OUR DIFFICULTIES BY SCREAMING AND MAKING DEMANDS."
    HE TOLD THEM THAT THEY SHOULD DROP THEIR THREATS OF DIRECT ACTION AND SET UP A STUDENT TASK FORCE INSTEAD TO HELP IMPROVE THE ECONOMY.

    ON THE RICE SUPPLY PROBLEMS, GENERAL SUHARTO BLAMED THE CHINESE COMMUNITY FOR ECONOMIC MANIPULATION.

    HE THEN LED THEM IN CHEERING "MERDEKA" (FREEDOM) AFTER HIS IMPROMPTU SPEECH.

    THE DJAKARTA PRESS HAS BEEN DAILY REPORTING THE ACUTE SHORTAGES OF RICE AND OIL SUPPLIES AND ITS RESULTING RICE RISE - MORE THAN 250 PER CENT IN EIGHT WEEKS.

    MEANWHILE, INFORMATION MINISTER BURHANUDDIN DIAH, ANNOUNCED THAT INDONESIA, ONE OF THE WORLD'S BIGGEST OIL EXPORTED, WOULD HAVE TO IMPORT ABOUT 2,500,000 LITRES OF KEROSENE TO OVERCOME THE SHORTAGE.
