  • Description

About two-thousand people attended a rally in Dublin organised by the Provisional Sinn Fein -- a group within the political-wing of the Irish Republican Army -- Wednesday night (29 November). The rally was held to protest against the conviction of Provisional IRA leader Sean McStiofain and against new legislation aimed against the IRA, introduced by the Government. Several hundred people were unable to get into the hall where the rally was held, and listened in pouring rain as the speeches were relayed by loudspeaker.

For an hour-and-a-half speakers levelled fierce attacks against the Government of the Republic of Ireland and -- what they called -- British imperialism. Among the speakers was Rory O'Brady, President of the Provisional Sinn Fein, and Miss Beanadette Devlin, an Ulster Member of Parliament.

Following the speeches the crowd marched on Leinster House, the Irish Parliament, but were stopped about 200 yards (metres) short of their goal by a force of about 1500 police.
