  • Description

Marking the eve of the 24th Anniversary of the Korean War, South Korean Defence Minister Suh Jyong Chul told South Korean youth in a press conference in Seoul on Monday (24th June) that they must not forget North Korea's 'war of communication' against the south, even though they may not have been directly affected by it.

Referring to the war of 24 years ago as "national humiliation", Suh urged all South Koreans: and especially the young to do their best "to insure an effective readiness posture".

Suh compared the reported intensive growth of North Korean irregular youth military cadres -- Seoul claims that Pyongyang now has well over two million such irregular troops -- with "disturbances in and out of school campuses" in Sough korea last year, and alleged that the 'regime' of North Korea's Kim Il-sung was: 'provoking' such social unrest in the south in order to further his 'malicious' aims.

Under the terms of President Park Chung-hee's recent proclamation of Emergency Measures, such campus and other 'agitation' by South Korea's students is now technically punishable by the death penalty.

Together with Education Minister Min Kwan-sick, the Defence Minister afterwards inspected students doing parachute, marching, rifle and nursing drill.
