  • Description

AN ESTIMATED HALF-MILLION MARYLAND DEMOCRATS WENT TO THE POLLS IN THE DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY ELECTION YESTERDAY (TUESDAY).

THE TWO CANDIDATES INVOLVED WERE THE SEGRATIONIST GOVERNOR OF ALABAMA, GEORGE WALLACE, AND SENATOR DANIEL BREWSTER. NEITHER OF THE CANDIDATES ARE SERIOUS CONTENDERS FOR THE DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION. BREWSTER CAMPAIGNED STRICTLY AS A "STAND-IN" FOR PRESIDENT JOHNSON WHO TOOK NO OPEN PART IN THE CAMPAIGN. AND WALLACE SAID HE WAS CAMPAIGNING LARGELY TO AWAKEN BOTH NATIONAL PARTIES TO WHAT HE DESCRIBED AS THE LATENT RESENTMENT IN THE NATION AGAINST THE CIVIL RIGHTS BILL AND "THE FEDERAL POWER GRAB."
AS EXPECTED IT WAS SENATOR BREWSTER WHO WON THE PREFERENCE ELECTION WITH MORE THAN 53 PER CENT OF THE POLL. BUT GOVERNOR WALLACE CAPTURED 42 PER CENT OF THE POLL -- A FAR LARGER SHARE THAN IN HIS TWO PREVIOUS EFFORTS AGAINST JOHNSON "STAND-INS" -- AND PROCLAIMED IT A VICTORY FOR HIS ANTI-CIVIL RIGHTS PLATFORM.
