  • Description

THE CONTROVERSIAL DUCCIO PAINTING "MADONNA AND CHILD", FOR WHICH THE NATIONAL GALLERY OF GREAT BRITAIN PAID GBP150,000 SEVERAL MONTHS AGO, WENT ON DISPLAY BEFORE THE PRESS IN LONDON TODAY (TUESDAY). THE PAINTING WAS BOUGHT AT AN AUCTION IN MARCH FOR GBP2,700 BY AN AMERICAN DEALER, AND SOLD FOR ITS VASTLY INCREASED PRICE SOME SIX MONTHS LATER. AFTER THE SALE TO THE NATIONAL GALLERY QUESTIONS WERE ASKED IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS ABOUT ART AUCTION "RINGS", WHICH WERE ALLEGED TO HAVE INFLUENCED THE LOW PRICE PAID AT THE MARCH AUCTION.

THE 13TH CENTURY PAINTING HAS BEEN UNDERGOING RESTORATION AND REPAIR SINCE IT WAS BOUGHT BY THE NATIONAL GALLERY, AND TODAY WAS ITS FIRST APPEARANCE BEFORE IT GOES ON PUBLIC DISPLAY.

THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRADE, MR. ANTHONY CROSLAND, HAS REFERRED THE ALLEGATIONS OF "AUCTION RINGS" TO THE BRITISH DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC PROSECUTIONS. THE ALLEGATIONS OF CO-OPERATIVE BIDDING AT AUCTIONS SPARKED INVESTIGATIONS BY THE BOARD OF TRADE AND A SERIES OF EXPOSES BY BRITISH NEWSPAPERS.

THE CHIEF RESTORER AT THE NATIONAL GALLERY, MR. LUCAS, HAS SPENT PAINSTAKING WEEKS CORRECTING SMALL FAULTS CAUSED BY TIME ON THE PAINTING. THE GALLERY HAS A FULL-TIME STAFF DEVOTED TO RESTORING AND MOUNTING WORKS OF ART.

OTHER NEWLY ACQUIRED PAINTINGS - INCLUDING A CEZANNE PORTRAIT OF HIS FATHER AND GIOVANNI BATISTA'S "THE INCREDULATION OF ST. THOMAS" - ALSO WENT ON SHOW FOR THE FIRST TIME TODAY.
