    HE LEFT CAIRO TODAY AFTER TALKS WITH PRESIDENT NASSER AND THE U.A.R. FOREIGN MINISTER, MAHMOUD RIAD.

    MR. SCRANTON TOLD REPORTERS HE HAD FRANK AND COMPREHENSIVE DISCUSSIONS WITH PRESIDENT NASSER ABOUT THE MIDDLE EAST SITUATION DURING A 90-MINUTE MEETING.

    THEY HAD ALSO DISCUSSED, HE SAID, DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BETWEEN THE U.S. AND EGYPT, BROKEN AFTER THE JUNE 1967 WAR, AND WHAT HE CALLED "POTENTIAL READJUSTMENTS OF THE POSITION".

    THE ENVOY WAS FLYING TO JEDDAH SAUDI ARABIA, TO CONTINUE HIS NINE-DAY FACT-FINDING MIDDLE EAST TOUR.

    HE SAID: "I LEAVE CAIRO MORE ENCOURAGED ABOUT A POSSIBLE PEACEFUL AGREEMENT THAN WHEN I CAME. I AM MOST APPRECIATIVE OF THE OF THE WARM AND CORDIAL WELCOME GIVEN ME DURING MY BRIEF STAY IN EGYPT BY PRESIDENT NASSER AND OTHER GOVERNMENT LEADERS."
