  • Description

The gates are locked - and thirty thousand people clamour OUTSIDE the Old Trafford ground - bitterly disappointed that they will miss the 6th round English Football Association Cup replay between the tragedy-hit heros of Manchester United and West Bromwich Albian - the Birmingham Club. The sixty thousand lucky fans roar their encouragement as United kick-off. And in this super-charged atmosphere, Manchester - in dark shirts - are battling on, their team - hastily reconstructed from second and third X1 players after the Munich air disaster - as yet undefeated. West Bromwich, with the full weight of experienced players, are the more skilful side. But the rain-soaked pitch calls for courage, determination and, above all, fighting spirit. And Manchester United have proved already that they have all these qualities in abundance. Goalkeeper Harry Gregg, one of the Munich survivors, inspires his younger colleagues and with no score at half time, Albion resume against a stiff breeze. Can Manchester United hold out? Certainly, their dark-shirted defenders, two of whom have never played in the senior team before, shield their goal with almost fanatical spirit. Both sides are tiring, the heavy conditions are sapping stamina and energy - but not the will to win. Albion stage a last all-out attack...and again Harry Gregg saves his side. Then it's United's turn to make a final effort; another crash survivor, Bobby Charlton makes ground ... a pass across goal and Colin Webster stabs the ball home...WITH ONLY SECONDS TO GO. Thus a single goal puts remarkable Manchester United in the semi-final of Britain's top-prize soccer competition. And the crowd..well why hide it? Every football fan in Britain is willing the United to win the Cup!
