  • Description

A revolving dome to spot stars is a landmark in the Melbourne suburb of Hampton. For not every house can boast an observatory in the back garden. The owner is Mr. Norman Jones, an astronomer by hobby and instrument maker by trade.

Mr. Jones built the observatory and this telescope in his spare time in more than seven years of painstaking work. Its lens and ten inch reflector are powerful enough to allow detailed study of the planetary system and variable stars. He has also built in many elaborate devices including a clockwork timing system which allows the telescope, unaided, to follow the moon across the heavens. Another refinement is an electrically heated coat to keep out the cold of Melbourne's winter.
