The People's Republic of Albania celebrated the 30th anniversary of its independence on Friday (29 November) with as big military parade through the capital, Tirana.

Jets flew over the city as thousands of veterans, regular troops, women soldiers and trainees marched before the country's leaders.

The salute was taken by Albanian leader, Enver Hoxha, who came to power as First-Secretary of the Albanian Party of Labour in 1946 -- two years after independence.

The small Mediterranean state - bordered by Yugoslavia, Greece and the Adriatic and Ionian Seas -- achieved independence in 1944 after the German and Italian occupation armies had been driven out.

Since then, it has remained largely isolated rom the western World.

The military parade was also attended by chairman of the People's Assembly (Parliament), Haxhi Llsshi and the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Party of Labour, Mehmet Shehu.

The military parade was followed by a civilian procession and a festival in the capital.
