Background: The Braemar Royal Highland Society's Gathering was held for the 153rd time on Saturday (September 5) in the presence of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and other members of the British Royal Family. Traditional Scottish sports, including tossing the caber and throwing the hammer were featured together with Scottish dancing to the accompaniment of the Bagpipes.

The Braemar Gathering, as it is known, has always been a popular event with the British Royal Family who are usually vacationing at the nearby Royal Scottish home, Balmoral at the time of the event.

Visitors come from all over the world to attend the Gathering - many of them claiming the right to be present through Scottish ancestry.

The Games originated as impromptu competitions in the Highlands when chiefs used to summon the Clans for hunting or military gatherings -- or just to discuss Clan business in general.

The Games came to an end after the Jacobite risings of 1745 broke up the Clan organisations. They were revived early in the 19th Century. Today there are about 40 major meetings in Scotland -- Braemar, however is the most universally famous.

The stirring music of the Pipes, big, strong men participating in sports of strength, plus the delicacy of expertly executed Scottish dances -- these are the attractions of the Braemar Games for both the Scots and those who visit them at the Gathering of the Clans.
