Background: THE END OF THE 30 MONTHS LONG OIL CRISIS IN ZAMBIA IS ALMOST IN SIGHT WITH ONLY 35 MILES (56 KMS.) OF THE 1,058 - MILE (16,095 KMS.) TANZANIA-ZAMBIA OIL PIPELINE LEFT TO COMPLETE. ALL BEING WELL IT IS BELIEVED THE GBP16 MILLION TAZAMA PIPELINE AND ITS PUMPING STATIONS COULD BE COMPLETE WITHIN A FORTNIGHT - MORE THAN TWO MONTHS AHEAD OF THE ORIGINAL MID-SEPTEMBER DEADLINE.

THE NEXT STAGE WILL BE TO PUMP WATER ALONG THE ENTIRE LENGTH, FROM DAR ES SALAAM TO NDOLA ON THE ZAMBIAN COPPERBELT TO CLEAN OUT THE PIPE AND TEST FOR ANY LEAKAGES. AFTER THAT THE FIRST OIL CAN BEGIN ITS LONG JOURNEY TO THE SOUTHWEST - 35 DAYS TO NDOLA IF THE PUMPS WORKED CONTINUOUSLY AT FULL POWER, MORE PROBABLY BETWEEN 50 AND 60 DAYS.

NEAR NDOLA THE ITALIAN CONTRACTORS, SNAM PROGETTI, ARE INTO A FINAL STRETCH OF ABOUT 20 MILES (32 KMS.). AT THE SOUTHERN END WORK HAS BEEN BADLY DELAYED BY ERRATIC PIPE DELIVERIES BECAUSE OF BAD ROAD CONDITIONS. THE RAINY SEASON HALTED PIPED CARRYING TRUCKS AS WELL AS OIL TANKERS ON THEIR WAY TO LANDLOCKED ZAMBIA WHICH HAS BEEN RELYING ON ROAD TRANSPORT SINCE RHODESIA'S UNILATERAL DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE IN NOVEMBER 1965.
