  • Description

Industry Ministers from 15 African countries opened a five-day conference on African Economic Development in Cairo on Tuesday (December 18th), during which they will discuss how to overcome obstacles to industrial development. They are all members of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). The meeting has also been sponsored by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and the Organisation of African Unity (OAU).

This follows a special ministerial meeting in Ethiopia last month in which greater co-operation between the OUA and the Arab League was urged. Egypt -- the hosts to the conference -- are members of both organisations. The recent Arab summit in Algiers set up a 50 million pound sterling (120 million dollars) fund to finance development in Africa.

In a message to the opening session, Egypt's President Anwar Sadat thanked African countries for supporting the Arab cause in the confrontation with Israel.
