  • Description

The military funeral of forty-three year old Army Major Julio Argentino Larrabure in Buenos Aires on Monday (25 August) was attended by many top ranking Army officials including the Army's commander in chief, General Numa Laplane. Larrabure's body was found by police on a deserted road near the El Gaucho railway station on Saturday and flown to Buenos Aires for Burial the same day.

Major Larrabure, who had been a prisoner in the hands of a group of left-wing guerrillas for a year at the time of his death, was reported by the guerrillas to have hanged himself last Tuesday.

During his captivity Larrabure was allowed to communicate with his wife, Maria Susana Martin and his two children through newspaper advertisements. At this week's funeral Mrs. Larrabure was supported by General Laplane.

Speaking at the funeral services General Laplane hit out at several military commanders in Argentina said to be demanding his dismissal because they believe he is allowing the army to become too involved in the country's politics.

Major Lerrabure's death last week marked the end of another week of political violence in Argentina which left at least twenty dead.
