    THE PORTUGUESE CHARGE D'AFFAIRES, MR. ANTONIO ROSANO GARCIA AND TWO EMBASSY WORKERS, INCLUDING A TYPIST, WERE ABDUCTED AND BEATEN UP. ALL THREE WERE TREATED AT HOSPITAL FOR BRUISES AND SHOCK.

    A CROWD ESTIMATED AT FOUR HUNDRED TOOK PART IN THE ATTACK ON THE PORTUGUESE EMBASSY.

    BOOKS AND FILES FROM THE THREE STOREY BUILDING WERE THROWN OUT AND BURNED AND THE BUILDING WAS SET AFIRE.

    THE RIOT FOLLOWED GRADUALLY DETERIORATING RELATIONS BETWEEN CONGO-KINSHASA AND PORTUGAL AFTER CONGOLESE CHARGES THAT MERCENARY TROOPS, RECRUITED BY FORMER CONGOLESE PRIME MINISTER, MR. MOISE TSHOMBE, WERE GATHERING IN NEIGHBOURING ANGOLA WITH PORTUGUESE APPROVAL.

    MR. TSHOMBE, WHO NOW LIVES IN EXILE IN MADRID, SAID HE WAS DESOLATE THAT VIOLENCE HAD AGAIN BROKEN OUT IN THE CONGO.

    PORTUGAL HAS LODGED A STERN PROTECT WITH THE CONGO-KINSHASA GOVERNMENT ABOUT THE INCIDENT AND ASKED FOR UNITED NATIONS ASSISTANCE IN PROTECTING FOREIGNERS IN THE COUNTRY.

    (IN KISANGANI, FORMERLY STANLEYVILLE, GOVERNMENT TROOPS AND PRO-TSHOMBE FORCES FROM KATANGA HAVE BEEN ENGAGED IN FIGHTING. GOVERNMENT FORCES ARE REPORTED TO HAVE RECAPTURED KISANGANI AND TAKEN 900 PRISONERS.)
