  • Description

Carpet weaving is a traditional Chinese craft whose origins have been traced back more than two thousand years. Many of the designs in use today are centuries old, and the
carpetmaking industry still flourishes... particularly in Peking, where the
scenes in this coverage were specially filmed for Visnews by Russell Spurr
during a visit to the People's Republic of China last October. Crafts such as
carpet-weaving are likely to be seen by Mrs. Patricia Nixon during her
forthcoming visit to China with President Nixon.

SYNOPSIS: The traditional Chinese craft of carpet-weaving still flourishes today
in many parts of the People's Republic of China. (PAUSE 5 SECONDS). The origins
of carpet-weaving in China can be traced back more than two thousand years, and
many of the designs still in use are thought to be centuries old.

Chinese carpets are notable for their raised pattern effects. (PAUSE SIX
SECONDS). One way the skilled craftsmen and women achieve this is by working
around the design outlines with electric shears.

Here, smaller rugs are carefully stacked for later examination. A best-quality
carpet... 10 feet by 12 feet... can take nearly a month to complete.

Chinese carpets are sold around the world. Many from this factory were bound for
    Europe.
