  • Description

Amman airport has been faced with a huge increase in traffic as the result of this weak's border closures, and passengers have had long waits in transit lounges.

When the fighting between the palestinian commandos and Jordanian troops broke out earlier this month, most of the Arab countries rallied to the support of the commandos.

Iraq closed her borders and air-space to Jordan, and Syria did the same a week later. Now Jordan appears to be politically isolated.

With the closing of the borders, Jordan is left with only two land outlets - to Saudi Arabia across the desert, end to Israel across the river Jordan. Land-traffic has, as a result, been diverted to the a relines.

The border closures are expected to seriously affect Jordan's trade, especially transit trade through Syria to Lebanon and to Kuwait and the Gulf through Iraq. Jordan's land trade now has to be re-routed through Saudi Arabia.

Also expected to be affected are Jordan's phosphate exports, partly shipped through Beirut and the Syrian port of Latakia.
