  • Description

The Commonwealth Games, and with a rest day for athletics, the main highlights again came from the swimming pool, with Canada still holding far more gold medals than any other country after six days of competition. But England's Sharron Davies headed off Canada's Becky Smith and Cheryl Gibson to take the gold in the women's 400 metres individual medley in Games record time. It was her second gold medal. Canada was back in the gold when Graham Smith won his fifth golf medal in the men's 100 metres breaststroke ahead of England's Duncan Goodhew and Paul Naisby. The end of the swimming event was marked by a tremendous finish to the men's 4 x 100 metres medley relay, in which Canada just pipped England for the gold. The B.B.C.'s Alan Weeks provides the commentaries, first for the women's 400 metres individual medley.
