    Former SS major - Dr. Albert Widmann - went on trial in Stuttgart today, charged with helping develop a mobile gas chamber in which thousands of Jews were killed in wartime eastern Europe.

    Widmann in also charge with playing a decisive role in the choice and analysis of the gases used in the chambers. The prosecution alleges that he took part in the 1941 test killing of mentally disabled people by gassing and dynamiting in the now Russian cities of Minsk and Mogilev.

    Widmann admitted to the court that he developed prussic acid and had grenades for the Nazi Security Service and melting down gold teeth and rings taken from gassed Jews.

    Also, he said he believed that the killing of incurable lunatics was legal.

    Twenty-six witnesses are scheduled to testify at the trial, which is expected to last until the end of September.
