The African Coordinating Council for the United Nations' Codex Alimentarius Commission meeting in Accera, Ghana, last week took time out to tour a cocoa production centre on Friday (19 September).

The Coordinating council is applying U.N. standards for the food production to African as a means of allowing them to standardise their production technique both to combat fraud and increase their potential for selling food products as on the world market.

The Cocoa plant is in the Tema heavy industrial area near the Ghanian capital of Accra. It processes 40 tons of cocoa cake, cocoa drink, chocolate and sweets.

The conference delegates watched as the various products were made and even sampled some of them. Generally, they expressed satisfaction at the quality of the produce and the efficiency of the operation.

The Codex Alimentarius Commission functions under the auspices of the food and Agriculture Organisation and the World Health Organisation. It is developing world-wide standards of food production. The Coordinating Committee is applying that work to Africa.
